Famous Volleyball Players – Did Your Favorite Make The List?

I have many famous volleyball players that have influenced my life and my desires to be a better volleyball player. As I think about it, remembering these great players is like a trip down memory lane.

Karch KiralyOne of my favorite all-time players is Karch Kiraly. Karch Kiraly had a very impressive career and was an amazing player. There really wasn’t anything that he didn’t accomplish. He won an olympic gold medal and he was one of the highest in career wins as a beach volleyball player. Plus, how do you not like his signature pink hat that he wore on the beach?

He was one of the most technical players out there. I remember reading a book he wrote titled Beach Volleyball. This book taught me many things about how to refine my own techniques and how to win those close games.

Another very influential volleyball player in my life was Randy Stoklos. I remember watching the King of the Beach tournaments when I was a kid. I remember his dominance at the time and how competitive he was.

This page could go on forever if I were to write down why all of these volleyball players were influential to me and why I remember them. Here are some of my other favorites:

Sinjin Smith

Ryan Millar (See The Ryan Millar Interview)

Misty May Treanor

Kerri Walsh

Mike Dodd

Volleyball Videos – These Videos Will Entertain and Train!

Volleyball videos can be a great way to either learn to play the game, or simply a way to watch amazing plays or bloopers. And that is what I wanted to devote this section of the site to…

Make Volleyball Practice Effective and Fun

Volleyball practice can be a very challenging time for a volleyball coach. Especially if the coach has never been a coach before. This section of the website will focus on practice plans and volleyball drills a coach can use.

However, knowing how to run a practice is only part of this. You also need to know how to teach the players to enjoy the game. Teaching people your passion for the sport is the other main responsibility of a coach. This is even more true if you are going to be coaching a youth team. They need to have that passion instilled in them at an early age so that they will continue to play this great sport.

So, let’s get into practice plans and how to structure a practice.

Volleyball Practice Plans

A great practice for volleyball would consist of several different components. It would consist of:Volleyball Practice Ideas

  • Proper Warm Up
  • Stretch
  • Fundamentals
  • Drills
  • Conditioning

Depending on the needs of your team, you can interchange these pieces as needed. If you are finding that your team needs to work on passing skills, then you may spend the majority of practice time working with your team doing various passing drills and coaching them one-on-one as needed.

As you focus on the fundamentals, you want to spend plenty of time on passing, setting, hitting, blocking, serving, and defense. These are the core fundamentals that every team must do well in order to be competitive.

In order for your practice to be optimized, you need to have a practice schedule. These ideas will give you tips on how to customize the practice to the needs of your team.

If you need to get some different ideas on how a practice would be structured, check out our practice plans for volleyball.

Making Practice Fun

This is the part that is usually neglected and the team can suffer as a result. If a coach can make the game fun for the team while still maintaining discipline, the team will perform better. The reason that they will perform better is because they want to and not because they have to. Players will always perform better when it is their choice.

So, how do you make practices fun and teach people to love volleyball? The best way I know how is to have fun with the team. Challenge the team to a contest. Who can pass the ball better? Who can get the most serves in? When coaches get involved with the team, the team will give respect and develop a love for the game. Many players do not care how much you know; they only want to know how much you care.

The other thing is to teach the fundamentals. When players know the fundamentals, they will perform better. As their skills increase, naturally their love of the game will increase as well.

Need some ideas for volleyball fun? These drills will change things up at practice when needed.

I hope this information will be valuable to a new coach and help them set up great a great volleyball practice.

Teaching Volleyball Skills Is Easier With These Tips And Techniques

Teaching volleyball skills can be a daunting task. It seems like the task gets even more difficult if you are teaching younger kids. So, how do you go about this endeavor?

That is the purpose of this section of the web site. I want to make teaching volleyball skills easy for you, the coach. Volleyball coaching jobs at any level require you to be proficient at teaching skills to your players.

Teaching Volleyball SkillsUse these sections to help you learn how to teach the various skills that will teach the children the volleyball fundamentals of passing the ball, how to set, how to rotate, serving the ball, and approaching the net to hit the ball. Depending on the age of the children, they may not yet be able to hit the ball, but learning the footwork will help them as they grow and can jump higher.

When progress is tracked and reported, progress improves. That is why I created a page on how to simply keep volleyball statistics. Check it out.

Here is the most important part of teaching others to gain volleyball skills: Watching is not the same as touching. I have seen some coaches over the years that demonstrate with one player, or they have the kids play 6 on 6 volleyball. This teaching method does not help and will not prepare the children to play.

When I think about how I learned to become proficient at volleyball, I learned by playing two on two volleyball. When you are playing in smaller groups, there are more opportunities to touch the ball, to make plays, and learn the various skills needed to be successful.

When you are teaching these skills to the kids, you must take a similar approach. In order for them to learn the skills, you must teach them how to do the individual skills, and then give them the opportunity to use them in a game situation. This is true for any age people that you are teaching.

Use these ideas to help you with your teaching.

How to coach volleyball is another important topic. I outline how to know what to teach the various age groups you might be coaching.

If you like this page, you will also benefit from the page on volleyball practice plans where you can get free downloads of sample practice plans.

Volleyball Team Name – For You, By You…

Your volleyball team name can be a fun, creative thing. Or it can be a name that tries to intimidate the opposition. What kind of name do you prefer?

Volleyball Team NameSome team names have nothing to do with volleyball at all.  One of my friends calls his team the Funky Monkeys. I know other one that goes for the One Legged Llamas.

Or, maybe you want a name that has a play on words with volleyball terms. I have seen a team called Gone Fishin’ because of the time they spend in the net. Or, maybe you like the name Sun Setters.

You could go for a team name that is supposed to intimidate the other team. I have seen a name like Above The Net or Kill Shot.

I frequently see people asking for a great team name. Since creativity is not really my strong suit, I thought it would be a good idea to see what other people could come up with. Here are some of the top names that have been submitted by others:

Refugees (Submitted by Marissa Hurley from Oregon. She mentions that the name was important because of a mid-season coaching change)

Six-Pack

En Fuego

Explozion

Shotz (All of those were from someone in Iowa that wanted to be nameless)

Victorious Secret (Another anonymous submission)

Sexy 6

Mighty Angels

What have been your best ideas for a team name? How did you come up with the name? Or did you use the name for one of your teams and you have a picture of your team to submit for the rest of us to enjoy?

Take a moment and share with the rest of us the best names you have seen!

Knowing Volleyball Rules Is The Starting Point

Volleyball rules are an important place to start. You cannot expect to be proficient at a sport unless you know what the rules are. This page assumes that you know nothing so that you will know how to play the game.

This page will be dedicated to teaching those rules. Rather than posting an official rule book, I wanted to post the simple rules so that someone could learn the game quickly.

Volleyball rules* Each team has three hits before the ball must travel to the other side of the net.

* The ball cannot be hit by the same player twice in a row (unless the first hit is a block).

* Indoor volleyball teams have six players on the court. Each of these six players play different positions.

To learn more about the different volleyball positions, click here.

* Most leagues now use a scoring system called rally point. Rally point is where a point is scored each time the ball is served regardless of which team served the ball. Details on the scoring systems can be found here.

* The ball is considered out of bounds if it lands outside the lines (of course), hits an antennae, or hits the ceiling and goes over the net. If the ball hits the ceiling and comes back down on the team’s side, the ball is playable unless they have already hit the ball three times.

* Coaches must also turn in a volleyball lineup sheet to identify the starting rotation of each player at the beginning of the set. If you need a volleyball lineup sheet, we have one you can download for free.

* The team that wins the point will serve.

* The height of the net varies depending on if it is a men’s game or a women’s game.

Volleyball net height details can be found here.

* Players must rotate each time there is a side out. A side out is when the team that did not serve wins the point.

* Players must stay in the some rotational order each time the ball is served. Failure to do so is a penalty on the team.

* The player that is serving must stand out of bounds behind the end line when serving. Today’s rules now allow the player that is serving to stand anywhere behind the end line.

* Players on the back row cannot attack the ball (spike) unless they jump from behind the attack line. What is the attack line? The attack line is explained here as well as volleyball court dimensions.

* Volleyball also has rules that pertain to the court dimensions. Click here to learn how the volleyball court measurements affect play.

As volleyball rules can change over time, check back here from time to time to see updates to the volleyball rules.

Heard a term and don’t know what it means? Be in the know with these volleyball terms.

You can also learn more about the history behind volleyball and how the game was created and started. Or if you are looking for some volleyball variations, you can get ways to adapt the game.

Although it may not have a lot to do with the rules, it is always a good idea to review volleyball safety and injury prevention tips. There is nothing worse than getting injured while playing the game.

Mental Toughness Training For Volleyball

Why is mental toughness training so important for volleyball players? Because so much of the game takes place in the player’s mind. Let me give you an example…

A player is receiving the serve and as they pass the ball, they make a mistake and shank the ball causing the other team to get an easy point. Now, the player is still thinking about the last play with the error instead of thinking about making the next play.

It is so easy for players to beat themselves up over a missed opportunity than it is for them to visualize their success for the next time. Since most people have a tendency to beat themselves up, I wanted to create a section of the site that deals with mental toughness and how to create it.

Mental Toughness TrainingI know a lot of high school volleyball players are looking to compete for volleyball scholarships. Developing this mental attitude is going to be a key component to make the scholarship a reality.

The truth of the matter is that you can actually have a mental edge over your opponent to the point where if the game is tight, you are going to pull out the win because you expect to win.

Do you remember the old Chicago Bulls teams with Michael Jordan? They came on the floor expecting to win. They knew they were going to win. Their opponents knew they were going to win. They had that mental edge. Often times, the first development of mental toughness comes from a small success in competition.

In order to have that first success in competition, the players must have that taste of success in practice. As a coach, you can help your players begin to develop this toughness by providing opportunities during practice for them to successfully use the training they have acquired.

Players will play the same way that they have practiced. If practice is sloppy and unfocused, you will likely have the same thing happen in a match situation.

I remember beating teams that we shouldn’t have won. That added to my confidence and I started to believe that we could beat anybody. A good part of my mental toughness training over the years has come from success against people I looked up to. When I realized that I could beat them, the sky was the limit.

This section of the site is dedicated to tips and strategies to create this winning mindset with players and coaches.

Where to go next?
